1904-1905 Russo-Jananese

This war between Russia and Japan was a disaster for Russia. It was one of the main reasons for the Russian revolution of 1905.

1905 Russian Revolution of 1905

Even though it was a failure, the Russian Revolution of 1905 was important because it weakened the Russian Government and reduced British apprehensions about Russian power.

1906 Algiciras Conference

Also known as the First Moroccan Crisis, the Algeciras Conference was a conflict between European powers and the United States about France’s relationship to the Moroccan Government. It started France and Britain’s alliance.

1911 Agadir Crisis

Also known as the Second Moroccan Crisis, the Agadir Crisis emphasized the need for British and French support. It set up a treaty between England and France that said if one got attacked by Germany, the other would come to its defense.

1912-1913 First and Second Balken Wars

In the first Balken War, the Ottoman Empire lost all of its territory in Europe except for a small part near Constantinople. In the second Balken War, Macedonia was splint between Serbia and Greece. Both of these conflicts made immediate peace but was a cause of World War I.

1914 WWI- Started July 28, 1914 ending on June 28 1919 when the Treat of Versatile was signed. Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia. The first month was very intense in the West, Germany attacked Belgium than France. 1922 Mussolini takes over Italy- Mussolini started as an everyday politician and then came to power in post World War I time. He was the dictator of Italy and inspired Hitler. Kagan

1929 The Great Depression- There was three main contributions to The Great Depression. The financial crisis, The crisis with production, and the lack of leadership with the economy. Kagan

1933 Hitler appointed German Chancellor- Hitler was appointed German Chancellor and from there it went downhill. He became a major dictator and wanted everyone to be the same looks and religion leading the Holocaust Kagan

1935- Nuremberg Laws

Antiemetic laws in Nazi Germany introduced at Nuremberg rally. Jews were deprived of citizenship and prohibited marriage between Jews and other Germans. An attempt to return the Jews to their position they had before the emancipation of the 19th century.

1936- Spanish Civil War

Began after the declaration of opposition by a group of generals. Spain was left militarily and politically divided. Became notable for the passion and political division it inspired. At the end of the war, those associated with the losing republicans were persecuted. Conservative Nationalists won. Established a dictatorship.

1939- World War Two begins

A vast majority of the world’s nations were involved including all of the great powers forming two military alliances, the Axis and the Allies. Resulted in 50,000 to 70,000 fatalities. It was the deadliest war in human history. Said to have started with the invasion of Poland. Total victory to the allies.

December 7, 1941- a day that will live in infamy, Japan bombs Pearl Harbor

Was intended as a preventive action to keep the U.S. from conflicting with their military actions. All eight U.S. battleships were damaged and 4 were sunk. 2,402 Americans were killed. America immediately entered the war.

June 6, 1944; D-DAY
D-Day is the day that “Operation Overload” began and was lead by the Allies in order to overcome the Nazi-occupied Europe. On this day 160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Operation Overload was commanded by American General Dwight D. Eisenhower and involved five separate landings by Canadian, British, and American troops.

1945; FDR Dies. WWII Ends. Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

1947; Marshall Plan. India and Pakistan Gain Independence.
The Marshall Plan was also known as the European Recovery Plan. It was created after WWII in order to help Europe recover from the damages of the war. It called for certain European countries to decide on their economic needs. On August 15, 1947, India and Pakistan gained independence, ending 200 years of British rule with the help of Gandhi.

Isreal is created. Israel was created for a Jewish homeland. The previous prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, took power and became the first modern leader. He was the one who declared independence. This caused fighting between Arabs and Israelis for years to come.


Apartheid Instituted. The apartheid was instituted in South Africa. It lasted until 1991. The apartheid controlled all governmental aspects in the country. Under the apartheid the black South Africans were discriminated against.

China Becomes Communist. The Communist Chinese win the civil war that has been going on since 1945 against the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT). China is taken over by Mao Zedong. He renames the capital Beijing and around 2 million KMT immigrated to Taiwan. This is one of the least of his problems because China had been at war for almost 20 years prior.

NATO Organized. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was put into order to respond to an attack from an external country and fight against Communism. NATO encouraged the free countries to hold elections and become democratic. It consisted of countries such as the U.S., Great Britain, France, and West Germany.

Korean War. Communist North Korea invades South Korea and causes the U.S. to get involved. At this time, NATO greatly feared the domino effect. They thought if North Korea successfully took over South Korea, the surrounding areas would become Communist as well. China intervened in 1950 to help North Korea.
